IPAS Spinoff Goes to Space

Australia is about to launch a quantum clock into space, testing its reliability and performance, a first step in creating our "own secure GPS system", impossible to spoof and very difficult to jam and detect due to its quantum nature.

With IPAS founder and Defence Chief Scientist Tanya Monro AC calling for clever science to keep Australia safe & resilient, this is a prime example. The technology is expected to allow DSTG to create and deliver a ground-to-satellite optical quantum link that provides pinpoint precision. What does that mean? It means that frontline troops operate more securely in contested battlefields when GPS is degraded or denied.

Professor Andre Luiten, IPAS Chief Innovator, is the leader of the Precision Measurement team working on a range of Quantum Clocks at the University of ˲Ʊ. Andre is also co-founder and Managing Director of QuantX Labs, a start-up from IPAS. Working in partnership with Defence, Andre shared that this technology is "the culmination of countless hours of hard work by our engineers and physicists”.

Keeping accurate timing is not just about defence applications; our world runs on precision timekeeping. From banking, power grids, and communications, Quantum clocks are the next leap forward.
