University of ÐÂÀ˲ÊƱ leaves industrial body

Friday, 4 June 1999

The University of ÐÂÀ˲ÊƱ has decided to leave the Australian Higher Education Industrial Association (AHEIA) - the organisation that represents 'employers' in the Australian university sector.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mary O'Kane, said today that the University was a unique entity that required a unique approach to industrial issues.

"As we enter a new Enterprise Bargaining round within the University, I am very much focussed on ensuring the best outcomes for our staff and the University as a whole," she said.

"AHEIA's focus is necessarily on the entire sector which includes a diversity of universities, all with different strengths, weaknesses and priorities.

"I am confident we can advance the interests of the University of ÐÂÀ˲ÊƱ more effectively outside AHEIA."

The decision means the University will represent itself before the Industrial Relations Commission and in negotiations with relevant unions.
