Join us for this exclusive opportunity to hear first-hand the results of ‘Safe Soil, Safe Food’ – pioneering research digging into PFAS concentrations in urban garden soils!
Made possible by citizen scientists from around the ÐÂÀ˲ÊƱ metropolitan region and FAME Sustainability grant funding from the University of ÐÂÀ˲ÊƱ, this project has been the first to examine donated backyard soil samples to examine how widely spread per- and polyfluouralkyl substances (PFAS) are in our home gardens.
PFAS are contaminants of increasing global concern due to their adverse health and environmental effects. These chemicals can enter soils through a variety of pathways, with urban environments being particularly vulnerable due to the dense human population.
Having sifted through hundreds of soil samples, the research project team are coming together to share the results with the community first.
Join soil health researcher Dr Matthias Salomon and PFAS expert Dr Shervin Kabiri to learn what was found (or not found!) in ÐÂÀ˲ÊƱ’s backyards. We will also share the latest in PFAS remediation techniques and endeavour to answer your soil health queries.
Optional: For those that are available, there will be time at the end (approx. 30 minutes) to meet your fellow neighbour and chat to the research project team in the adjacent foyer area.
Catering: Light refreshments will be served.
Venue: This session will be held in the Napier building using lecture theatre G04. Detailed information about campus accessibility can be found online here: /hr/culture-and-values/diversity-and-inclusion/disability/staff-with-disability/access-to-facilities-on-campus#accessible-campus
Online access: For those of you that are unable to be physically present, please note that an opportunity to attend this session online has been provided.
We look forward to welcoming you to this opportunity to learn more about the soil that sustains us!
