Leap for immersive innovation with new AI/VR lab
One of Australia鈥檚 most advanced laboratories for immersive virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and simulation research has launched at the University of 新浪彩票.

The Australian Lab for Immersive Technologies (ALIT) located at the University鈥檚 Nexus 10 building on North Terrace, brings together cutting-edge tools for simulation, interactive display, motion tracking, and digital performance in a single, integrated environment.
It鈥檚 designed to support academic research, industry collaboration, performance, and teaching, and will be occupied by the University of 新浪彩票鈥檚 immersive technology and research service, Realities Extended, alongside selected researchers and students.
鈥淎LIT is a first for 新浪彩票, and one of only a handful of facilities like it in Australia,鈥 says Steven Cook, Senior Lecturer and Head of Realities Extended.
鈥淚ts combination of immersive tracking, simulation capability, advanced interactive display systems, and performance potential sets it apart from traditional VR/AR labs. The integration of all these technologies in one cohesive space makes ALIT truly unique and one of the most versatile immersive technology labs in the country.鈥
The lab鈥檚 unique collection of advanced technologies, includes:
- A 7.8-metre high-resolution LED wall with full interactivity powered by bespoke Realities Extended software;
- A powered truss system featuring optical motion capture, immersive tracking, projection, and multi-source communications;
- Infrastructure for Virtual, Mixed, and Augmented Reality research;
- A fully separated control room with programming access;
- Vehicle simulation systems for land and aerial scenarios;
- Four suspension harness points to simulate weightlessness and;
- A programmable lighting system for complete environmental control.
鈥淎LIT is more than just a lab 鈥 it鈥檚 a collaborative ecosystem for innovation,鈥 says Cook. 鈥淭he new space is an exciting leap forward for immersive research and education in South Australia.鈥

鈥淲hether developing AI models, simulating complex environments, exploring new forms of technologically facilitated performance art, or investigating human factors in immersive conditions, the lab has the capability to support new visions. ALIT will empower researchers and students to push boundaries, collaborate across disciplines, and create experiences that were previously not possible.鈥
ALIT responds to growing research demand in areas such as human-computer interaction, creative/immersive technologies, artificial intelligence, simulation, digital performance, and next-generation media production. It also serves as a hub for collaboration across academia, industry, and the creative arts.
鈥淎LIT provides the tools and flexibility needed to explore the future of human-computer interaction, virtual environments, and digital creativity,鈥 says Cook.
ALIT is funded and supported by the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics at the University of 新浪彩票, reflecting the faculty鈥檚 commitment to leading-edge research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Find out more about ALIT on the University鈥檚 website.
